No doubt that Philippe Coutinho is living a new life at FC Barcelona since he found back his favorite position on the pitch as new Barca boss Ronald Koeman makes tactical changes.
The third season in a Barcelona jersey could be the best for Philippe Coutinho. After spending the 2018/19 at Nou Camp, the 28-year-old has been sent on loan to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich last season.
And former Liverpool star enjoyed his stay in Germany despite not having a starting role in Hans Flick’s team. He won the highly coveted Champions League and scored in the humiliating 8-2 win over his parent club Barcelona in semi-final.
In total, Coutinho made 38 appearances, scored 11 goals and provided 9 assists with Bayern before making quicker than expected his return to Spain.
Back to his favorite position
Ronald Koeman succeeded where Ernesto Valverde and Quique Setien failed. In fact, the Dutch tactician places Coutinho where he used to play during his time at Liverpool. That is in front of two defensive midfielders (Milner and Henderson).
Koeman broke the mythic 4-3-3 system which is incorporated in every Barcelona player’s DNA, to settle the 4-2-3-1 tactical scheme with De Jong and Busquets who are defensive and Coutinho positioned in front of them in support of Ansu Fati and Lionel Messi.
A role in which he is excelling since the start of La Liga this season. As he begun all Barca’s three games, assisting twice and scoring his first league goal as they drew 1-1 to Sevilla Sunday night in a game that saw Sergino Dest’s debut.
“It was a complicated and difficult game, we already knew. This has just begun. We have made a point and now there is a break in the teams,” Coutinho told Marca at the end of the game.
It is a bit difficult three games, but we are at the beginning. We will get used to this and we will continue working. Sevilla have played very well.
There was a lot of concentration of Sevilla players in the center of the field and that’s why it cost us a bit. We have to correct it.” he added.
However, Philippe Coutinho vowed he is committed to perform better this season with Barcelona and do prominent things for the club.
“I really want to work and do important things.” ex-Inter Milan midfielder said.
